History of the Shield

Tuesday, 2nd November 2010 - Inaugral Challenge Shield race, held on Melbourne Cup Day at Wingatui, won by Lucy Star. Lucy Star is trained at Wingatui Racecourse by Course Manager, Wayne Stevens.

Saturday, 22nd January 2011 - Lucy Star, in her third defences of the shield is defeated by The Jester at Gore Racecourse. The Jester is trained at Woodlands by the Dennis Brothers.

Saturday, 19th February 2011 - The Jester is defeated in his second defence of the shield by Petty Lane at Ascot Park Racecourse, Invercargill. Petty Lane and The Jester finished first and second in the race. Petty Lane is trained at Ascot Park by Lisa Vaughan.

Sunday, 6th March 2011 - Petty Lane loses the shield in her first defence to The Boys. The Boys was breed by the Dennis Brothers, trainers of the last challenge shield holder The Jester. The Boys is trained at Wingatui by Brian and Shane Anderton.

Saturday, 23rd April 2011 - The Boys in her second defence of the shield loses to Peter Richard at Riverton Racecourse. Peter Richard is trained by the President of the Southland Racing Club, Sean Bellew at Ascot Park and is part owned by the Gallop South Racegoers Club.

Monday, 25th April 2011 - Peter Richard makes history by losing the shield in record time to Peter Porter on Easter Monday at Riverton. Peter Porter is trained at Winton by Greg Wright.

Sunday, 15th May 2011 - Peter Porter loses the challenge shield to Golden Spot at the Wairio Jockey Club meeting at Ascot Park. Golden Spot is owned and trained by Kelly Thompson and was ridden by Jamie Bates.

Sunday, 5th June 2011 - Golden Spot lost grip of the shield at Wingatui on Ladies Day to Copperhead Road, another Southland trained horse. Copperhead Road is trained at Ascot Park by Jack & Jo-Ann Gordon.
