Media Release - Heritage Races

New Category for the Region’s Historic Races 

Wednesday, July 28 - 2010 

Gallop South is honoured to announce a new category for races regionally regarded as historically important. These special races will be known as “Gallop South – Heritage Races”. The first race to be identified as such will be this Sunday’s Oamaru Cup, which was first run in 1883. 

Gallop South is not overly blessed with black type races. The region hosts just seven stakes events, the highest rated of which is the Otago Racing Club’s Group 3 White Robe Lodge Handicap. The creation of this new category of event will give local stakeholders a more regular opportunity to celebrate success in key races. 

The southernmost region of New Zealand is home to 14 race clubs and many of these have proudly staged racing for well over 100 years. There are several races that have been run on club’s programmes that have a history that is as illustrious as any Group or Listed event run anywhere in the country. Many of these events have at some time in the past been categorized as blacktype, some have not, but each has had a vital part to play in the development of racing. 

Gallop South has decided to introduce a new category of recognition for these special races, so that they stand out above the ordinary and thus ensure they are not lost to racing programmes in years to come.    

Winning owners of each and every one of the identified Heritage Races listed below during the 2010/11 season will receive a special momento in recognition of their success. 

All Heritage Races will be identified as such in Gallop South programmes in the Thoroughbred Racing Monthly. 

The Heritage Race roster includes several events that have not been competed for in recent years but will be re-introduced this season, races that are still run although the original club staging the event has disappeared and races that have been developed in recent seasons that clubs are eager to see maintained into the future as special races. 

Attached is the full list of Gallop South Heritage Races, the club that originally staged the race, the year it was originally run, its traditional distance and conditions and its estimated first year of running.
