WINTON JOCKEY CLUB
Set in pristine Central Southland, the Winton Jockey Club is the oldest standing racing club in Southland. Winton lies in the heart of Southland amidst lush green paddocks and fertile soils. Winton is situated on the main highway between Invercargill and Queenstown and has a population of approximately 2200 and services a greater rural area of 6000 people. Winton first came into prominence in the days of the gold rushes, as it was one of the stops on the waggoning route from Invercargill to the goldfields, via Kingston. The town was established in 1861, and in 1862 a police barracks was erected and a year later the Great North Road was cut. Winton is probably the oldest inland town in Southland.
